A comprehensive and a college dictionary of legal terms is necessary for an understanding of the content and functioning of a legal system. Of particular importance is a dictionary which should serve the need of students in this field and also the general public. An attempt has been made through the ages to this book, to provide professional knowledge to those in the field of law and general knowledge to persons outside this field. Law students in India come across legal terminology drawn not only from English but also from many regional and local languages. Laws which have had their origin in India, like personal laws, when put into English have to use several terms of the original language. Many principles and doctrines of English law also owe their origin to Roman and other laws. The language of English law is therefore, itself full of expressions foreign to the English language. A student needs the help of a legal dictionary which would acquaint him with the enormous complexity of the language of law. The present work is an attempt in that direction. Law has to take its share of the impact of expanding human technology. Advancing technology has also showed its impact upon subjects like engineering, building, military and maritime matters, and also mercantile transactions. Words have therefore, been collected from such fields and also terms from the allied and applied 'fields are incorporated into the present work. Apart from the above fields, words have also been taken from fields like banking, insurance, carriage, transport, arbitration, shipping, hotel industry, lodging, boarding, construction, publishing, financing, processing, supply of energy, entertainment, amusement, purveying of news, including other information. Also, expressions used in science, art and commerce which have acquired a quasi-legal status and words that are frequently used in revenue records and private documents have also been included. Legislative definitions have been incorporated together with judicial comments, if any. Such other words that have not been legislatively mentioned have been explained in terms of judicial expositions. A significant portion of the work consists of extracts from decisions of eminent judges, highlighting the golden quality of definitions and explanations of legal terms. The contribution of the eminent authors in the field of law has also been truly utilised. For the purpose of explaining terms which have not been statutorily or judicially defined wherever necessary, synonyms and antonyms have been brought into service for establishing a pin-point precision in the statement of meanings and scope of legal expressions. Legal maxims have also been inserted in their alphabetical order. The book carries almost an exhaustive collection at maxims together with suitable comments. .........................................................................................................................
