Description
Soli Jehangir Sorabjee was the Attorney General for India from April 1998 to May 2004, which constitutional office he has also held in 1989-1990. He was the Solicitor General of India and Addl. Solicitor General of India in late seventies. He started legal practice in 1953 and was designated Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India in 1971. Mr. Sorabjee mainly practices in the field of constitutional and administrative law. He was a Member of the National Commission to Review the Working of the Constitution. He is the President of the United Lawyers Association. He is the Vice-President of the Commonwealth Lawyers' Association. He is also the Ford Foundation Chair in the National Law School University of India in Bangalore. He is also Member, Executive Committee of the International Law Association and the International Association of Constitutional Lawyers. He is a honorary Professor of Law at the Gujarat National Law School, Gandhinagar. He was appointed by the United Nations Human Rights Commission as Special Rapporteur in October 1997 to report to the UN General Assembly on human rights situation in Nigeria. He was appointed in May 1999 as the Personal Envoy of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for East Timor. He is a member of the UN Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities since 1998. In July 2004 he was unanimously elected as Chairperson of the 56th Session of the UN Sub-Commission on Promotion and Protection of Human Rights. He is a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague. He has appeared and argued several cases of constitutional importance in different High Courts and in the Supreme Court of India, particularly cases relating to the Freedom of Expression, Freedom of the Press and Protection of Human Rights. He appeared and successfully argued in April 2000 for the Government of India in the International Court of Justice at The Hague in relation to the Pakistan complaint regarding aerial incident. He was awarded in 1952 the Kinloch Forbes Gold Medal in Roman Law and Jurisprudence. Padma Vibhushan, the second highest, civilian award, was conferred on him in March 2002. He has written many articles and books, which include The Law of the Press Censorship in India; The Emergency, Censorship and the Press in India; Monographs on Equality in the United States and India and Protection of Human Rights in Emergencies; Chapter on The Constitution and the Governor in "The Governor, Sage or Saboteur" [1985]. He has edited a book Law & Justice - An Anthology of legal essays (Universal). He has delivered several lectures on different aspects of constitutional and administrative law and in particular on press freedom, independence of the judiciary and human rights. He also contributes a regular fortnightly column in one of the national dailies. His other interests are literature, especially poetry and music, particularly jazz. Mool Chand Sharma
Presently Director, National Law Institute University, Bhopal. Concurrently professor, Law Faculty, Delhi University. Has published extensively including three books on issues relating to Law & Poverty, Constitutional Jurisprudence and Human Rights. Has been Research Advisor to National Human Rights Commission, National Consultant to UGC, Senior Consultant to Ford Foundation and many other organisations. Holds his Doctorate from Northwestern University, Chicago and has been visiting scholar to many Universities abroad.
Raju Ramachandran is a Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court and a former Additional Solicitor General of India. He is the author of Changing Profession, Changing Ethics (2004). He is also revising author of B.R. Agarwala's Supreme Court Practice and Procedure (2002) and co-editor of Supreme but not Infallible: Essays in honour of the Supreme Court of India (2000)
