............................................................................................................................ Description Tribute From Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer "Generations of lawyers and judges have consulted Ratanlal and therefore this monumental book has been a teacher of teachers, a consultant of lawyers and judges and a voluminous, yet luminous, educator in the field of criminal justice. What is interesting is that beyond the frontiers of India, wherever the Indian Penal Code has been the foundation of criminal justice, Ratanlal has been ubiquitously present: in Srilanka and Malaysia and in other countries where Macaulay's work has been the basis of criminal law. Ratanlal has been a handy volume on the table of a lawyer, in the shelf of a law library and in the hands of students facing law examinations... I have benefited by the book as a student, lawyer and judge. The clarity of thought, the light thrown on penal law through discussion, illustrations and case-law are instructive.... The original authors were mortals. But their great book remains immortal and will continue to be so.” ............................................................................................................................ Author Details Author - Ratanlal & Dhirajlal Revising Author - Justice C.K. Thakker Hon'ble Mr. Justice C.K. Thakker is the Judge of the Supreme Court of India. He has wholly dedicated himself to the legal profession with over 40 years of experience. After completing his LL.B. from Gujarat University, he joined the Bar in the year 1968 and soon secured the distinction of being among the leading advocates with a flourishing practice in the civil, criminal and constitutional laws. On account of his deep understanding of the law and an ability to dissect the legal nuances, he was called on the Bench. He .was elevated as a Judge of the Gujarat High Court in 1990 and has since delivered several landmark judgments. Justice Thakker was elevated as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh in May, 2000, was transferred as the Chief Justice of High Court of Bombay in December, 2001 and was appointed as a Judge of the Apex Court in June, 2004. He is gentle, modest and humble in his approach, ever ready to be of assistance to the legal fraternity. He has actively participated in several workshops teaching, guiding and understanding the problems of the subordinate judges in Gujarat and in Himachal Pradesh and in Maharashtra and Goa. Indeed, he is not only a believer in civil and human rights but sincerely practises them in real life. Justice Thakker belongs to that privileged class of scholarly judges who with all pre-occupations, responsibilities and heavy demands of judicial work spare time for arduous legal writings on various subjects. His scholarship has been amply evidenced by many legal publications of standard quality. Lord Denning has described Justice Thakker's 'Administrative Law' as "Indian contribution to a subject, which rivals that of Sir William Wade". Sir William Wade himself certified the work as "thorough and scholarly". According to Lord Templeman, the book is "comprehensive and illuminating", wherein the theory is splendidly explained and the practice amply illustrated. Justice Thakker's revision of 'Law of Writs' has been characterised by Lord Denning as "magnificient work" in not only updating the subject matter but revising it thoroughly. Through that work Justice Thakker has done much "to preserve the rule of law and the doing of justice throughout the sub-continent of India". .............................................................................................................................
